FASTag: Buy, Recharge, Annual Pass and Complaints

A FASTag is bought from a bank, fixed on the inside of the front windscreen and recharged like a wallet. Private car owners can also buy the annual pass: ₹3,075 (from 1 April 2026) for one year or 200 toll crossings at national highway plazas, bought only on the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website. Without a working FASTag you pay 1.25 times the toll by UPI. For a wrong deduction, complain to your FASTag bank within 40 days.

Getting a FASTag working
  1. Choose a FASTag bank: branch, bank app or website, or a counter at a toll plaza
  2. Give your RC, a photo and ID proof, and confirm your mobile with an OTP
  3. The bank checks the vehicle on VAHAN before activating the tag
  4. Pay for the tag (up to ₹100) plus the bank's deposit and first recharge
  5. Stick the tag on the inside of the front windscreen
  6. Private car, jeep or van using national highways often? No: just recharge as needed
  7. Buy the annual pass on the Rajmargyatra app or NHAI website
  1. Pick a FASTag-issuing bank. The list of member banks is on NPCI's NETC FASTag page.
  2. Apply with the vehicle's RC, the owner's photo and ID and address proof.
  3. The bank validates the vehicle against VAHAN (or the RC, if the vehicle is not on VAHAN) before it activates the tag.
  4. Pay the tag price, which is capped at ₹100. Banks usually also take a refundable deposit and a first recharge; amounts vary by bank and vehicle type.
  5. Fix the tag on the inside of the front windscreen, and remove any old tag from the vehicle.

✔ You'll know it worked when your bank app shows the tag as active and you get an SMS for your first toll deduction.

Regular FASTag, annual pass or commercial vehicle?

Regular FASTag

  • Each toll is deducted from your FASTag wallet or linked bank account.
  • Works at national highway plazas, state highway plazas and FASTag parking.
  • Keep enough balance before you travel; a low balance can get the tag blacklisted.

Annual pass for private cars, jeeps and vans

  • ₹3,075 from 1 April 2026 (₹3,000 before), for one year or 200 trips, whichever comes first.
  • Valid only at national highway and national expressway plazas, about 1,150. Elsewhere the tag works as a normal FASTag.
  • Buy only on the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website. It is added to your existing tag, usually within 2 hours. Pay separately; the FASTag balance can't be used.
  • Each crossing of a toll plaza counts as one trip, so a return journey is two. On closed toll roads, entry and exit together count as one.
  • The pass can't be transferred, and the tag must be linked to the registration number (not the chassis number).
  • After 200 trips or a year it switches back to a normal FASTag; buy it again to continue.

Commercial vehicles

  • No annual pass. A pass used on a commercial vehicle is deactivated without notice.
  • The tag's vehicle class must match the vehicle, or the tag can be blacklisted.
  • Unpaid toll stops fitness renewal, NOCs and national permits until it is cleared.

How do you recharge a FASTag?

  • Your FASTag bank's app or website (UPI, cards or net banking).
  • UPI apps and the Bharat BillPay option in banking apps.
  • Auto top-up from a linked bank account, if your bank offers it.

Recharge well before a trip, and check the tag status in your bank app or the MargMitra help section of the Rajmargyatra app. Paytm Payments Bank FASTags can't be recharged since 15 March 2024; get a tag from another bank.

What do you pay at a toll plaza?

SituationWhat you pay
Working FASTagThe normal toll
No working FASTag, paying by UPI1.25 times the toll (since 15 Nov 2025)
No working FASTag, paying cash2 times the toll, where cash is still taken
Tag not stuck on the windscreenDouble toll, and the tag may be blacklisted
Toll e-notice after a barrier-free plazaThe normal toll if paid within 72 hours; double after that

National highway plazas moved to digital-only payment (FASTag or UPI) from 10 April 2026, according to All India Radio, except initially in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry. Toll unpaid for more than 15 days after an e-notice is recorded on VAHAN, and the RTO can then refuse services such as an NOC, ownership transfer or fitness renewal.

What happens to the FASTag when you sell or buy a used car?

Selling your vehicle

  • Ask your bank to close the FASTag account and refund the balance and deposit as per its terms, then remove the tag.
  • Clear any unpaid toll first, or the RTO may refuse the NOC or transfer.
  • A FASTag can't be moved to another vehicle.

Buying a used vehicle

  • Buy a new tag in your name from any bank once the transfer shows on VAHAN.
  • If the bank says a tag already exists, the seller has not closed the old one. Ask the seller to close it, or ask your bank or 1033 for help.

How do you get a wrong deduction refunded?

  1. Note the date, time, toll plaza and amount from the SMS.
  2. Complain to your FASTag bank (helpline or app) within 40 days. The bank raises a chargeback; it usually takes 20 to 30 working days.
  3. For toll plaza problems (tag not read, wrongly blacklisted), call 1033 or use MargMitra in the Rajmargyatra app.
  4. Not solved? Write to IHMCL at [email protected].
  5. If the bank does not reply within 30 days or rejects the complaint, complain to the RBI Ombudsman within 90 days of the bank's reply.

Got a toll e-notice you think is wrong? File a representation within 72 hours; it is decided within 5 days.
