Which change do you need?

Change of address

  • Sarathi service: Change of Address in Driving License. Some state menus show it as Apply for Change of Address.
  • Upload one proof of the new address, such as Aadhaar, passport, voter list entry, LIC policy or a salary slip.
  • Moved to another state? Sarathi asks you to choose the RTO after you enter the new address. Ask that RTO what it needs, because no national rule on this was found.

Change of name

  • Sarathi service: Change of Name in Driving License.
  • After marriage: Form 2 lists an affidavit (sworn before a First Class Judicial Magistrate or a notary), the marriage certificate, and a copy of a newspaper advertisement of the name change.
  • Other name changes: the same affidavit and advertisement. A gazette notification isn't named in Form 2, so ask your RTO whether it accepts one.

Correction of date of birth

  • Sarathi service: Change of Date of Birth in Driving License.
  • Proof of age from the Form 2 list: birth certificate, school certificate, passport or Aadhaar. A birth or school certificate is the strongest proof.
  • The RTO decides on the evidence. We found no published national rules on how often or how late a date of birth can be corrected.

Photo, signature or biometrics

  • Sarathi services: Change of Photo and Signature in DL and Change of Biometrics in Driving License.
  • Upload ID proof. A new photo or biometrics is usually captured at the RTO, so expect to book a slot.

With or without Aadhaar: do you need to visit the RTO?

With Aadhaar authentication

Under notification S.O. 4353(E) of 16 September 2022, these changes are available online with Aadhaar authentication. The Ministry told Parliament in 2024 that people using this route don't need to visit the RTO. Some states, such as Odisha, still show slot booking and an RTO visit in their steps, so follow what Sarathi asks for your state.

Without Aadhaar

Aadhaar is voluntary. Without it, you apply with other documents and visit the RTO in person with the originals.
