HSRP Number Plate: Rules, Booking, Price and Fines

A high security registration plate (HSRP) is the tamper-proof number plate with a chromium-based hologram and a laser-branded identification number. Every vehicle sold from 1 April 2019 gets it from the dealer. Older vehicles need it where the state has ordered it: book through the portal linked from your state transport department's website, pay online only, and get it fitted by an authorised dealer. Price and fines differ by state.

Does your vehicle need an HSRP?

Registered on or after 1 April 2019

The Central Motor Vehicles (Sixteenth Amendment) Rules, 2018 (G.S.R. 1162(E), 4 December 2018) require HSRP on all new vehicles from 1 April 2019. The manufacturer's dealer fits it before registration and delivery, so you already have one. The cost is included in the vehicle price.

Registered before 1 April 2019

Your state transport department decides when older vehicles must switch to HSRP, and sets the fine. Rajasthan and Odisha, for example, have issued orders; deadlines differ. Check your state's latest notice.
