How do you overtake safely?

YouRoad clearCheck

Overtaking a slow vehicle
  1. Check your mirrors and the road ahead
  2. Is the road ahead clear, with no bend, junction or crossing? No: stay behind and keep a safe gap
  3. Signal right
  4. Pass on the right of the vehicle
  5. Signal left and return to the left lane once you can see it in your mirror

Which rules does the drive teach?

  • Keep left. Drive in the left lane and move right only to overtake.
  • Overtake on the right. Overtaking on the left is allowed only in a few exceptions in the Driving Regulations, 2017.
  • Obey signs. A red circle is a mandatory sign (for example a speed limit). A red triangle warns of a hazard (for example a sharp bend).
  • Give way to emergency vehicles. Move left and let an ambulance or fire engine pass (section 194E of the Motor Vehicles Act).
  • Keep a safe gap, enough to stop if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, and more in rain.
